‘Project to study the Silk Routes’
In the eight century, Omanis had sailed the Indian Ocean to Canton in China, and to East Africa.
With the participation of many scientists from different nations and organised by the Unesco and the government of Oman the Royal yacht Fulk AlSalama started in 1990 from Venice, Italy, on 25th October and reached Osaka in Japan on March 3rd 1991, with stops at several ports on the way.
This book, a compilation of papers and with themes like ‘The Influence of Trade Routes relating to Oman in ancient times,’ or, ‘Oman’s Role in the Maritime Silk Route. Human, Commercial and Navigational Factors towards a Maritieme Achievement,’ gives some inside details that makes the reconstruction of this journey and in general the Silk Route more vivid and interesting not only from historical and cultural point of view.
